The MHOH program:

Funded by Department of Health WA, MHOH is designed to address some of the complex health concerns faced by people from culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) communities. Using a culturally appropriate approach that addresses the sensitivity of the subject, MHOH intends to raise awareness taking a holistic approach to health and wellbeing to enhance the knowledge of Blood-Borne Virus (BBV), Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and Sexual Health and promote access to prevention, testing and treatment.

 

Some of the key barriers addressed by MHOH program include:

• Lack of awareness and understanding how this can be a health risk
• Lack of awareness and knowledge about Transmission
• Misconceptions of BBV and Sexually transmitted Infections (STI)
• Stigma and taboo around the subject
• Lack of awareness and knowledge about services and how best to access them
• Cultural differences which would include traditional beliefs about sex and sexual relationships
• Language
• Cost of access to services if not eligible for Medicare.

 

To achieve its objectives, the MHOH education and prevention program:

• Provides culturally and linguistically appropriate information sessions related to Health and wellbeing.
• Provides culturally and linguistically appropriate information and education on Blood Borne Virus (BBV), Sexually transmitted Infections (STI) and sexual health. Provides bilingual workers and service provider’s relevant knowledge and skills to deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate sexual health, STI and BBV education and related information to CaLD communities.
• Empowers youth from CaLD backgrounds through mentoring programs that provide information and education on healthy living to promote MHOH objectives.
• Promotes healthy living habits and encourages communities to be more involved in activities that improve their attitudes towards healthy living especially in regard to BBV, STI and sexual health.

Please note:

• It is intended ONLY as a guide and can be a resource for community workers and community services working in the area of Blood Borne Virus (BBV) and Sexual Health with culturally and linguistically diverse communities (CaLD).
• It’s aim is to motivate CaLD communities to better participate in self - management of their health in relation to BBV and sexual health.
• It attempts to provide only baseline information about sexual health and STIs’, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV, and how these diseases can be prevented and treated.

 

• VIDEOS:

These videos add to the resource we have developed and have been created for the communities to enhance their knowledge and awareness for Hepatitis B and C. The content is simple and delivers messages that address some of the gaps in knowledge and understanding of Hepatitis B and C in communities. The videos have been developed after a rigorous assessment of community needs. Simple relevant messages on the infection, transmission, symptoms and treatment have been the focus to get some conversations on the infection initiated.

The Videos are in 4 languages English, Hazaragi, Acholi and Karen. The Videos are in two formats 5 minutes presentation and a shorter version which is a 3 minutes presentation.
